>> live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. >> more than 30 suspicious fires in the east bay, tonight, investigators believe one person started all of them. this guy. >> at least eight east bay cities got torched at some point. the hot spots were highway 4, highway 24, and marsh creek road. christin ayers is standing near one of the crime scenes. christin? >> reporter: yeah guys, you are looking at some of the damage firefighters say james wilson did all over the east bay. set fires that blackened hillsides like this one and got close to home in some cases. by midsummer, the fires were happening frequently.

july 20, this 20-acre fire flared in bay point. a smaller fire in lafayette burned eight acres. then july 30, a series of small fires. firefighters didn't say they believed it was the work of the same serial arsonist. >> we needed to keep that secret so we could catch this person. the one thing we didn't want was for them to go into hiding and feel they were onto them. so we kept that a secret. >> reporter: until today when contra costa fire and cal fire announced this was their man. 29-year-old james wilson. >> this morning mr. wilson was arrested without incident at his residence. >> reporter: he is jailed and facing eight counts. they believe he set upwards 30 fires since april and each fire was worst than the last. >> it is not unusual for a

serial arsonist to escalate. and they start with small seemingly harmless fires. but most of them are not harmless. and they will escalate. >> reporter: what is worse, he did it in the midst of governor brown's emergency drought declaration which could mean a harsher punishment. amazingly, nothing was hurt and no homes burned. wilson is behind bars tonight in martinez. he is on $1 million bail. reporting live in lafayette, christin ayers, kpix5. the rainbow girls are back at it. this is a group of young women who walk into stores and start stealing and stealing a lot. tonight, mark kelly shows us they brought some guys along. >> reporter: it is like washing a flash mob for thieves. one by one, the rainbow crew looking cool and calm struts in, then with impeccable timing, all nine suspects

hiding around a corner ambushed a police officer shooting him in the leg. the officer shot back and hit the suspect as well. tonight, that man is under arrest. the police officer will be okay. for the second time in two weeks, terror at the movies. this time, a man armed with a hatchet and a pellet gun went berserk at a theater outside nashville, tennessee. veronica de la cruz with what we know tonight. >> reporter: we don't know of a motive just yet. but tonight, cnn reports the attacker was a paranoid schizophrenic who had been committed four times in the past. [ sound of gunfire ] that's the sound of police shooting at the man they say entered a movie theater this afternoon and went on a rampage. >> it was a lot. a lot of shots. he was coming from the side of the theater. >> reporter: police say the suspect, this 29-year-old, was armed with pepper spray. this hatchet, an also, this pellet gun. he was wearing a backpack on

his chest and a surgical mask. he started blasting people in the theater with pepper spray just as mad max fury road was starting. officers working a traffic accident nearby ran to the theater. >> the gunman opened fire on the south prevent officer. that officer returned his fire and backed away. >> a swat team entered a short time later and the suspect fled. >> ultimately, the suspect came out of the back door of the theater. he was shot, fatally wounded and pronounced deceased here at the scene. >> two women and one man hit with pepper spray were treated at the scene. >> i'm eternally grateful. >> the man sustained a superficial injury to his shoulder from the hatchet. there were only eight people in the theater at the time. tonight a lot of people wonder how could this happen again? >> it makes no sense. lafayette, louisiana two weeks ago, aurora, colorado, three

years ago. >> that really makes it scary. >> it's been the summer we have had. thank you veronica. a traffic nightmare tonight at lax because of a power outage. traffic signals, elevators, escalators all went down just before 8:00 p.m. the electricity came back on a short time ago. but things are still a mess. no word on what caused the blackout. tonight, french investigators say yes. part of a wing that washed ashore is from malaysia airlines flight 370. the chunk was found on the french territory of reunion island. it is big enough that investigators can try to figure out what caused the plane to go down. the boeing 777 dropped off the radar in march of 2014. crews are searching for more debris in the indian ocean. we learned the governor is going to meet with firefighters tomorrow who have been trying to contain the massive rocky fire. that fire is up to almost 70,000 acres. the largest fire in the state.

but firefighters are slowly getting a handle on this one. we just checked in. it is now 30% contained. andria borba says this fire is forcing firefighters to rewrite the manuals. >> reporter: firefighters say the rocky fire has exhibited extreme fire behavior out here over the past several days burning in all directions at once. exactly what the fire fighting textbooks say should never happen. the only thing for certain is between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., this fire spark up and torches off thousands of more acres. while that did not happen this afternoon, firefighters believe that the marine layer that moved in overnight with the slight amount of rain the fire received may have helped lay this down. this may help them get a line permanently around it and put it completely out. in lake county, i'm andria borba, kpix5. clouds will be on the increase in and around the rocky fire tomorrow, but humidity will remain low. temperatures high. temperatures will 90 to 95

degrees. the smoke from this fire was shoved up the sacramento valley today. wilson walker caught this sunset near mount shasta city. look at how defuse the sunlight is because of all the smoke that has been transported 150 miles up valley all the way toward redding and weed in the northern sacramento valley. we have a rain chance around here coming up as soon as this time tomorrow. that low pressure area right there moves directly over the bay area. there may be rain on the radar this time tomorrow night. we will talk more on that coming. >> thanks paul. the air national guard is fighting the rocky fire. they are using these massive c130s . the mission is they refuel, drop a big load of retardant and go back and do it again. >> it does get tiring after a while with the heat and everything. but got a lot of folks out here helping us out. >> yeah, one of these c130s flew five missions yesterday. almost all the pilots have
